Our approach
Learning in Practice
Learning in Practice is the foundation to our approach and it informs everything we do. But what is it? What is special about it? Why do we believe that it's a more effective way of developing managers and leaders?
Leaders, Knowledge and Action
Fundamentally, managers and leaders must get things done. Action is at the heart of what they do. To help them they have the "management toolkit" - the body of knowledge that provides models, principles, tools, concepts and frameworks.
But we believe [and research backs us up] that knowledge alone is insufficient. Knowledge needs to be connected to a corporation's context and a manager's working life - and lead to action. Learning in Practice makes this happen.
Learning in Practice
Learning in Practice is not neat and tidy. It occurs in many kinds of ways, in different places. It's often messy, unstructured and discordant. At GTN we accept this reality and adapt to it, building flexible yet coherent programs that will have a real impact for people and organizations.
So, practically, what would a development program, informed by Learning in Practice, look like?
Designing Programs
Typically, our approach will produce custom programs that offer:
- Expert group facilitation in the seminar room or online via virtual collaboration and e-learning technologies
- Complementary experiential learning using, for example, simulations, action learning and custom case studies
- Individual support through performance coaching and project facilitation
Working with Clients explains in more detail how Learning in Practice is built into the design and delivery of programs, drawing on the many design options available.
